Boys team looks for continued improvement

Friday, December 6, 2013 by TYLER TRUMBAUER Special to the Press in HS Sports

Leadership and experience are necessities for a successful athletic team. Especially for a squad that is trying to rebuild.

The Northwestern boys' basketball team will be going through 2013 with only one returning senior.

"We are really only returning three players from last year who saw significant time," said third-year head coach Dan Eddinger. "So in the beginning we are going to be a really young and inexperienced team. Obviously that creates question marks."

The Northwestern girls basketball team enjoyed a lot of success in 2012, but has no hardware to show from it.

Head coach Chris Deutsch is working to make sure that history doesn't repeat itself this winter.

"Our goal is to win the Colonial League championship," said Deutsch. "That is the top goal. We got to the finals last year so this year our goal is to get there and win it, definitely. We also want to make a better run in districts to hopefully qualify for states as well....

Friday, November 22, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Early on, the Class AA Eastern Conference championship game looked like it was going to be a story of missed opportunities and back-and-forth battles. Then, North Schuylkill appeared to find a groove before Northwestern fired back in the second half to claim a 19-18 win and their first Eastern Conference title in the school's history.

It looked like the Tigers would jump out to an early lead, but a costly penalty and two incomplete passes stalled their drive that started in Spartans...

This year's team improved every week as several young players made their marks...

Northwestern's quest for a state title in girls soccer came to an end Saturday when they dropped a 2-0 decision to Villa Joseph Marie at Exeter Township High School. The Jems played a tough defense and gave the Tigers very little room to operate on offense. Northwestern was able to manage just five shots on goal in the game.

"Their defense was unbelievable today and we had a tough time getting any open looks," said Northwestern head coach Kelly Bleam. "That early goal kind of had us...
