Nicole Sagl not only competed in the District 11 Diving Championships last year, she won gold for Class 2A. Even so, the Central Catholic student who lives in the Northwestern School District was tense coming into this year's meet.

She was able to overcome it and put together an 11-dive program good enough to repeat as the district champion.

Ortiz earns D-11 gold

Wednesday, February 27, 2013 by PATRICK MATSINKO in HS Sports

To say the Northwestern wrestling team had a tough act to follow after last year's district tournament would be an understatement. The Tigers crowned two champs last year, with Mike Ortiz (152) and Levi Veppert (182) both earning gold.

Veppert graduated, but Ortiz returned to capture his second consecutive gold medal, this time at 170-pounds. Ortiz came into the tournament as the top seed and left little doubt that he was the class of the field.

Ortiz moves on to regionals this...

Lady Tigers fall to Spartans

Wednesday, February 27, 2013 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

They might not get to hang a banner in the gym. But the Lady Tigers' season was still a successful one.

The team won 20 straight games, finished the regular season at 21-1 overall and 15-1 in Colonial League play.

Three losses in their last five games wasn't the way anyone thought the season would end, but it shouldn't take away from the pride this team can take in all it accomplished.

"I look back at the season as a success," said Northwestern head coach Chris Deutsch...

Tigers seek payback against No. Schuylkill Lady Spartans

Wednesday, February 20, 2013 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

A lot of teams don't like more than a full week off between postseason games.

Northwestern head coach Chris Deutsch believes it could be just what the doctor ordered. His team could use a few days to recover from Friday night's devastating loss in the Colonial League semifinals.

The ninth-year head coach called it the toughest locker room he's ever walked into after defeat.

"It's going to be hard to pick everyone up," Deutsch said. "That was a tough loss. Having to wait...

Burns ready for first ACC Championships

Wednesday, February 20, 2013 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

Like any college athlete, Madison Burns was excited to embark on her swimming career at the University of North Carolina.

She looked forward to starting a new chapter in her life and her swimming career. And, as much as anything, she couldn't wait to be part of a team.

Growing up, she had been part of youth teams and swam for club teams such as the Parkland Aquatic Club. But Northwestern Lehigh High School does not have a swim team, so other than some summer leagues, Burns...

They found out again in Friday night's Colonial League title game.

Southern Lehigh, a team which blew an 18-point third quarter lead in its first meeting with Northwestern, got revenge in Friday's league championship...
