Improved Crusaders seek fourth win of season

Thursday, September 26, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

One of the key Colonial League football matchups this week includes two improved teams going head to head. The Northwestern Tigers (2-2) take on the Notre Dame Crusaders (3-1) in a game that will help to determine just how improved each of the teams have become.

For the past few years, both Northwestern and Notre Dame weren't the toughest games on anybody's schedule. While they're still not at elite status, both teams have come a long way and are looking to gain more respect among...

Miller pulls off three-peat

Thursday, September 26, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

Northwestern Lehigh's Cole Miller will be the first one to admit last Wednesday's round at the 2013 Colonial League Golf Championships at Bethlehem Golf Club wasn't his sharpest.

But Miller's even-par 71 was enough to lead the rest of the Colonial League, and the senior was able to add a third consecutive league title under his belt.

"The drivers and irons were really solid," Miller said. "I hit 13 greens, and I hit plenty of fairways. I really gave myself chances to make a lot...

Tiger boys soccer leads CL North Division

Thursday, September 26, 2013 by TJ ENGLE Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Northwestern boys soccer team suffered just two Colonial League losses last season.

Monday afternoon, the Tigers had a chance to avenge one of those losses when Bangor brought its young team to New Tripoli.

Northwestern got its revenge, handing the Slaters a 3-1 Colonial League.

"This one was big for us," Northwestern head coach Nate Hunsicker said. "We felt we left one get away up at their place last year. We lost 1-0. We had a ton of chances, but we just couldn't...

Lady Tigers take DeSales title

Thursday, September 19, 2013 by TYLER TRUMBAUER Special to the Press in HS Sports

Haley Yost and the Northwestern girls cross country team like the DeSales Invitational because it helps them gauge where they stand early in the season.

After Saturday's 34th annual DeSales Invitational, the Lady Tigers stood atop of the field and the podium.

Led by Yost's third-place finish, the Northwestern girls won this year's meet title, beating Perkiomen Valley and Parkland.

"I told the girls that if we have a race where you all run well, we will be hard to beat,"...

Tigers use no-huddle offense in win

Thursday, September 19, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Northwestern coach Josh Snyder was happy with his team's 26-0 win over Wilson Friday night, but he could have been happier. His team played well enough to win, but didn't execute as well as he would have liked and certainly didn't play as well as they did in their 43-6 win over Salisbury in week two.

"We always preach that every Friday night should be our best game of the season; that we want to be better than we were the week before and we didn't do that," said head coach Josh Snyder...

Defense must be stout against SL

Thursday, September 19, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Northwestern's offense has been lighting up the scoreboard the past couple weeks, putting up 43 points against Salisbury and 26 against Wilson. Even with that scoring, the offense has nowhere near the power of the Southern Lehigh Spartans, who have scored a total of 131 points this season, good enough for second in the Colonial League.

Stopping the Southern Lehigh offense starts with trying to contain quarterback Travis Edmonds, who has completed 61 percent of his passes this season...

Falcons fall, 43-8

Thursday, September 12, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

After a disappointing loss to Palisades in week one, Northwestern put together an impressive performance against Salisbury that resulted in a 43-8 win over the Falcons to even their record at 1-1.

Tigers' coach Josh Snyder stressed to his team in the week leading up to their meeting with Salisbury that they needed offense, defense and special teams to all perform well.

He also stressed that the meeting with the Falcons was a key game even though it was so early in the season,...

Girls volleyball team seeks first CL title

Thursday, September 12, 2013 by TYLER TRUMBAUER Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Northwestern girls' volleyball team is vying for a Colonial League championship this fall.

This season is the first year that someone could utter that statement.

As the Northwestern girls' volleyball program enters its second season of existence, the Colonial League is entering its first fall sports season where they have girls' volleyball as a league sport.

"It is really great that the girls get to compete in a league," said head coach Amilee Schillinger, who has...

Wilson brings freshman QB

Thursday, September 12, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

After two games, Northwestern coach Josh Snyder is pleased with how his team has played even though they've gotten off to a 1-1 start. Week one brought a disappointing loss to Palisades, but the Tigers rebounded nicely in week two with an impressive 43-8 win over Salisbury.

"We had five turnovers against Palisades, but were still in that game," said Snyder. "We played well and might have had a different outcome if we protected the ball, so we worked a lot on that against Salisbury and...
