It had been a long time since the Tigers won a game in dominating fashion.
Their 68-35 win over Palmerton on Tuesday marked their largest margin of victory since last year's season-opening 56-23 win over Kutztown.
"We've never really had an experience like this before," said Northwestern senior Jarred Binder of his team's 3-3 start to the season.
"It's a big win for us. Our confidence is high. I think we can really feed off of this for the next game."
Junior captain Ramzy Burns of the Muhlenberg College women's cross country team was named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll for excellence in the classroom and on the course for the second consecutive year.
Burns, a Northwestern High School graduate, placed 61st at the CC Championships to help the Mules match the best finish in program history. They came in fourth, behind three teams ranked in the top 20 in Division III, for the second year in a row.
For Northwestern to be the kind of team that it wants to be this year, the Tigers need to continue to pull out games like Tuesday night's contest against Pen Argyl.
The Tigers took an early lead before the Knights fought back. Pen Argyl even took a lead in the second half, but Northwestern showed resilience and heart down the stretch to pull out a 52-48 win in their home opener and league opener.
"When they kept coming back it was like a flashback to last year," said Tigers...
As seniors at Northwestern back in 2011, Payton Bachman and Ty Cunningham played large roles on both sides of the ball.
In their first season at Wilkes University this fall both former Tigers earned their way onto the field, but for the first time in their careers they squared off on opposite sides of the ball.
"It was different," said Cunningham, who played outside linebacker in nine of the Colonels 10 games. "There was more competition between us."
"We were going...
Northwestern's girls basketball team got off to just the kind of start it hoped for this season.
The Lady Tigers opened the season with nonleague wins over Stroudsburg and Pleasant Valley last weekend. They made it three straight on Tuesday with a win in their Colonial League opener at Pen Argyl, 48-24 for their second straight win on the road.
"I'm excited about getting this win on the road," said senior guard Sara Jones after scoring 26 points at Pleasant Valley Saturday. "...
Northwestern's wrestling program is going through a youth movement.
With several wrestlers graduating from last year's line up, which was only slightly more than half-filled in most matches, the Tigers will replenish their roster with several freshmen this year.
"We'll have a lot of freshmen starting in the line up," said head coach Jim Moll. "They'll get thrown into the fire right away and we'll see how they adapt."
Northwestern usually six bouts per match last season....
After a few lean years, Northwestern's girls basketball team has been on a steady rise over the last few seasons.
The Lady Tigers, which won just three games in the 2009-10 season, won seven games the next year and improved to 15-9 overall and 11-5 in the Colonial League last year.
They qualified for the district playoffs for the first time in three years and made league playoffs for the first time since winning the 2007 title.
This year's team, which returns five...
Northwestern's boys basketball team has spent the past two seasons at the bottom of the Colonial League pecking order. This year the Tigers hope to start climbing up toward the middle, or even the top, of their league.
"I want to make districts," said senior guard Ty Richardson, the team's most experienced returning varsity player. "Our team goal is to make districts, maybe even the league playoffs. We want to at least win 12 or 14 games this season."
It's a lofty goal for a...
