Tigers’ Norman reaches districts in first golf season

Thursday, October 4, 2018 by MIKE HAINES in Sports

Last year at this time golf was barely on Cole Norman’s mind.

This year he is one of a select group of high school players to qualify for the District 11 Championship Tournament Monday at Lehigh Country Club.

Norman qualified for districts by taking third place at last week’s Colonial League Championship at Bethlehem Municipal Golf Cousre.

The Northwestern senior played one of the best rounds of his young career to shoot 84 and earn third place at leagues.

Spartans visit for Homecoming game

Thursday, October 4, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

For a team that prides itself on having one of the better ground games in the Colonial League, the Tigers looked like a different animal last week in their 49-0 win over Palmerton (1-5).

In last week’s win, Northwestern (5-1) set a team record with 370 yards passing and quarterback Deven Bollinger threw for five touchdowns to set a record for the most touchdown passes in a game by a Northwestern quarterback, while surpassing Frank Dangello to become the school’s all-time passing...

Offense sets records in win

Thursday, October 4, 2018 by ROD HECKMAN in Sports

Seven possessions.

Seven touchdowns.

It doesn’t get much better than that.

Northwestern’s offense scored every time it touched the ball Friday night (not counting a final drive in which it was running out the clock) as the Tigers rolled to a 49-0 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Most of the damage done by Josh Snyder’s club against the Blue Bombers came through the air, as the head coach made a conscious effort to get the passing game going.

Volleyball looks to overcome key injuries

Thursday, October 4, 2018 by TODD KRESS in Sports

The past two weeks have been rough for the Northwestern volleyball team. Head coach Lexi Ashburne lost two of her senior starters in the past 14 days, and it’s had a clear impact on the Tigers on the court.

Tuesday’s match against one of the Colonial League’s top teams was the first time Northwestern suited up without both of those starters. And their voids were felt against Notre Dame (Green Pond).

Notre Dame’s serving game was on point, and the Crusaders defeated Northwestern...

Hathaway leads girls soccer over SL

Thursday, October 4, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

In the middle of a stretch of tough games, the last thing that Northwestern needed was to play some extra soccer. On Monday and Tuesday, the Tigers went to overtime to pick up a 3-2 win over Notre Dame (Green Pond) and a 4-3 win over Southern Lehigh. It doesn’t help that the team is dealing with a number of players not feeling very well and having to play through the illnesses.

On Tuesday, senior Sara Hathaway scored on four different types of plays to lead the Lady Tigers (7-2-0...

Big second half helps girls soccer beat Bangor

Friday, September 28, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

Northwestern coach Kelly Bleam admits that her girls had a difficult week, but she wasn’t ready to accept any excuses. When her team came out flat against Bangor, she used halftime to let her players know that she wasn’t at all happy with how they played in the first 40 minutes. That not-so-gentle encouragement woke the team up enough to turn a scoreless game into a 6-0 win over the Slaters in Colonial League play.

“I kind of yelled at them,” said Bleam sheepishly after the win. “We’...

Tigers top Falcons in OT

Friday, September 28, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

It seems to happen often. Two teams play to a scoreless tie through regulation and just a few minutes into overtime, somebody finds that elusive goal and sends their team home happy. Such was the case Tuesday night when the Northwestern and Salisbury field hockey teams were scoreless through 60 minutes and then Sydney Derr broke the tie a little over three-and-a-half minutes into overtime, allowing the Tigers to celebrate a 1-0 win.

For the winning goal, Derr broke down the left side...

Northwestern bounces back, beats Wilson

Friday, September 28, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

On their first two drives of Friday’s game against Wilson, Northwestern gained just 21 yards.

The good news is that was all they needed to score two touchdowns after opening the game with drives starting from the Warriors 10- and 11-yard lines, respectively.

The early field position battle helped Northwestern take a 31-14 win on their home field.

On their opening drive, Wilson (0-4) struggled to gain any ground and punted the ball away.

The kick went higher than...

Norman takes third place at league tourney

Thursday, September 27, 2018 by The Press in Sports

The annual Colonial League Golf Championships were held Monday at Bethlehem Catholic Golf Course.

Moravian Academy took top honors, with Lions winning the boys and girls individual titles while also capturing the team title.

Moravian’s Davis Koch and teammate Will McKay both shot 83 before Koch won the title outright on the second playoff hole.

Northwestern’s William Norman grabbed third place by shooting 84 on the par-71 Monocacy Course.

Grace Sanborn shot 90 to...
