Bollinger named to All-State team

Saturday, January 5, 2019 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

As Deven Bollinger sat in class on Thursday, little did he know that he had been named to the all-state football team at the quarterback position. In fact, it wasn’t until later in the evening when his teammate Conner Snyder congratulated him via a text message that Bollinger had any inkling about the honor. Bollinger then took to Twitter to confirm the news that he had garnered the biggest honor of his high school career – so far.

Even with the big season that he had leading...

Boys beat Hawks

Some teams shy away from physical play on the basketball court. All they want to do is run the court and avoid contact, much like a fighter who knows he’s in trouble.

The Northwestern Tigers can run the court with the best of them, but they can also stand their ground and battle. When their recent game against Hamburg took an extremely physical turn, the Tigers used it to their advantage and came away with a 69-51 win, turning what was once a close game into a blowout.

Girls beat Hamburg to go 5-0 in nonleague games

Saturday, January 5, 2019 by MIKE HAINES in Sports

With a win over Hamburg last Thursday, the Northwestern girls basketball team completed its nonleague schedule without a blemish.

The Tigers started fast and pulled away in the second half last week in a 49-31 win on the Hawks’ home floor.

That completes a 5-0 nonleague slate and allows Northwestern (9-1 overall) to focus entirely on Colonial League games the rest of the way.

“This is our tenth game of the year already,” said Tiger head coach Chris Deutsch. “We played 10...

It’s been a tough start to the season for the Northwestern Lehigh boys basketball team. The early schedule had the Tigers off for the opening weekend but then backed up a bunch of games, leaving them with little time to practice or rest up. Finally, they hit a point in the schedule where they had three days off last week and used them to work on some things in practice.

The result was one of their better performances of the season in a 56-43 win over Northern Lehigh in a key Colonial...

One of the perplexing things for Northwestern girls basketball head coach Chris Deutsch has been the fact that his team will sometimes come out and start slowly in a game. The Tigers might have done that Friday night against Northern Lehigh if not for sophomore center Emily Sekerak, who rattled off the team’s first 10 points of the game and helped lead Northwestern to a 45-38 win over the visiting Bulldogs.

“We’ve come out slow in a few games, and I don’t know why that is, but tonight...

Tigers top Bombers

Monday, December 24, 2018 by PATRICK MATSINKO in Sports

Time will tell what it means at the end of the year.

But for one night, its importance was obvious.

An early-season Colonial League showdown with Palmerton last Thursday was a chance for Northwestern boys basketball coach Billy Hallman to find out a little bit more about his team.

The Tigers gave Hallman exactly what he was looking for with a 55-43 victory over the Bombers.

“This was a big game, (against) a rival, a division opponent, a really good team, early in...

Grapplers down Palmerton

Monday, December 24, 2018 by TODD KRESS in Sports

Northwestern head coach Jim Moll expected a tight match in the Tigers’ Colonial League opener at Palmerton last week. He even anticipated a much closer result than what transpired.

Nonetheless, it was a solid win for a Northwestern team that graduated six wrestlers and four state qualifiers a season ago.

Three Tigers picked up pins last Wednesday night, including Ryan Haverkamp’s fall at 182 pounds to close out Northwestern’s 40-30 win over Palmerton.

“We expected a...

Lady Tigers fall to Southern Lehigh

Monday, December 24, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

Northwestern and Southern Lehigh have had some pretty spirited battles over the past few seasons, but the Spartans have been ruling girls basketball in the Colonial League and they looked to flex their muscles against Northwestern in their first meeting of the season.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, Southern Lehigh was able to corral the high-scoring Northwestern offense and hang the first loss of the season onto Northwestern’s record with a 45-30 win over the Tigers.

It was the...
