Northwestern Lehigh head boys soccer coach Nate Hunsicker stood quietly in front of his team's bench after a 3-1 loss to Central Catholic last Thursday in the District 11 Class 2A semifinal at Northern Lehigh.
Hunsicker was reeling in how the Tigers, the No. 2 seed, controlled most of the contest against the No. 6 Vikings, but just couldn't get the ball into the net.
The Vikings (9-7-4) and Tigers (15-5-1) were engaged in quite a physical contest and eventually something had to...
Northwestern's girls cross country team was trying to continue its tradition of excellence. The Tiger boys team was trying to build that kind of tradition.
Both were successful at last week's District 11 Championships. The girls capped a second straight undefeated season with a Class AA district title, their second in the last four years. The boys team, which finished it's league season behind Bangor, won its first district title in program history.
Both teams will compete at...
The goals at the beginning of the season were to win a tournament and make the district playoffs.
Northwestern accomplished both in its first season as a high school volleyball team. It even went one step further, winning its first District 11 match before falling in Saturday's quarterfinal against top-seeded Bethlehem Catholic.
"I really, truly look back on it as a successful season," said head coach Dave Hufnagle. "We set goals and we attained them for the year. A successful...
Northwestern has already faced nine of the 11 other football teams in the Colonial League this year. This week it will face the best of the league's dozen teams as Catasauqua visits Northwestern already having sealed this year's title and one of the top two seeds for the District 11 Class AA playoffs.
"It's definitely going to be a challenge," said Northwestern head coach Josh Snyder. "They have a ton of athletes at all positions. It's a tough match-up, esepcially on a short week."...
It's been a few years since Northwestern's boys soccer team headed into the district tournament with the confidence and desire it has this year.
The Tigers (15-3-1) won the Colonial League's North Division, but fell in double overtime in a heartbreaking league semifinal against Southern Lehigh.
A week later the team was back on the pitch as the No. 2 seed in the quarterfinal round of the District 11 Class AA playoffs, where Kyle Willis and Boston Furjanic led the Tigers to a 4-...
With games remaining against the top three teams in the Colonial League and playoff hopes fading, the Northwestern football team is embracing the role of spoiler.
After a 57-19 loss to rival Northern Lehigh last Friday, the schedule only gets harder for the Tigers.
That starts this week against Pen Argyl on Saturday afternoon.
"You want to peak at the end of the year, so its good that you play championship-like teams every week," head coach Josh Snyder said. "You look at...

Marian Catholic defeated Northwestern in a non-league volleyball contest, 25-16, 25-12, 25-12.
Marykate Sherkness had 12 kills and eight digs to lead Marian. Grace Boyle added eight aces and four kills and Abby O'Donnell chipped in with 29 assists.
For Northwestern (7-6), Trista Cunningham had five kills. Sara Hufnagle had seven assists and Mariana Valencia added 11 digs.
Northwestern's start was exactly what head coach Josh Snyder wanted.
The rest of the game didn't quite go according to plan.
The Tigers took advantage of a couple of big plays by their special teams to score two touchdowns in the game's first 93 seconds.
But it was all Northern Lehigh after that as the Bulldogs rolled to a 57-19 mercy-rule victory Friday night.
"We talked about getting off to a good start tonight after getting off to slow starts the last couple of...
SLATINGTON – Sarah Segan said Northwestern hasn't been looking ahead this season.
After blitzing Bangor, 6-0, in Tuesday's Colonial League girls soccer semifinals, Segan said the Tigers can now finally focus on avenging a loss in last year's CL title game.
"We want to win the league championship so bad," said Segan. "We've been trying to focus on taking things one game at a time the entire season. But now that we've made it [to the final] we can finally focus on it.
FLEETWOOD - Northwestern Lehigh golf coach Tim Miller was a happy man following the PIAA Eastern Regionals on Tuesday at Golden Oaks Golf Course.
Both Cole Miller and Nick Vecellio, the two Tigers that made the East Regional qualifier, shot rounds of 77 to earn spots in the PIAA 2A tournament next week at Heritage Hills Golf Course in York.
"They've been battlers all year," the coach said. "The best thing I like to say about these two young fellows is that golf is icing on the...
