Bulldogs take down Tigers in rivaly game

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 by EMMETT MCCALL in HS Sports

Northwestern's start was exactly what head coach Josh Snyder wanted.

The rest of the game didn't quite go according to plan.

The Tigers took advantage of a couple of big plays by their special teams to score two touchdowns in the game's first 93 seconds.

But it was all Northern Lehigh after that as the Bulldogs rolled to a 57-19 mercy-rule victory Friday night.

"We talked about getting off to a good start tonight after getting off to slow starts the last couple of...

Girls get shot at Colonial redemption

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 by EMMETT MCCALL in HS Sports

SLATINGTON – Sarah Segan said Northwestern hasn't been looking ahead this season.

After blitzing Bangor, 6-0, in Tuesday's Colonial League girls soccer semifinals, Segan said the Tigers can now finally focus on avenging a loss in last year's CL title game.

"We want to win the league championship so bad," said Segan. "We've been trying to focus on taking things one game at a time the entire season. But now that we've made it [to the final] we can finally focus on it.

Northwestern duo reaches states

FLEETWOOD - Northwestern Lehigh golf coach Tim Miller was a happy man following the PIAA Eastern Regionals on Tuesday at Golden Oaks Golf Course.

Both Cole Miller and Nick Vecellio, the two Tigers that made the East Regional qualifier, shot rounds of 77 to earn spots in the PIAA 2A tournament next week at Heritage Hills Golf Course in York.

"They've been battlers all year," the coach said. "The best thing I like to say about these two young fellows is that golf is icing on the...

Lady Tigers go 26 x 2

Thursday, October 11, 2012 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

It might seem hard to believe, but the past two undefeated season for Northwestern's girls cross country team are the products of something that happened four years ago, maybe longer.

It started with the Tigers' 2009 team that went 26-0, led by seniors Lindsay Kerr, Ramzy Burns and Megan Handwerk.

This year's seniors were freshmen on that team and they learned from those upperclassmen.

"Those seniors were just incredible," said senior Lauren Alden. "I don't know where I'...

Rivalry game set for Friday

Thursday, October 11, 2012 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

Northwestern-Northern Lehigh is one of those special rivalries.

To call it a friendly rivalry wouldn't be right. It wouldn't give justice to the hard-hitting, all-out contests the two schools have in every sport they play.

But it is one of those rivalries where both sides respect each other like no one else they face. They want to beat each other and do it with authority. But after the game they can shake hands and leave the grudges on the field.

With both teams still...

Schuler scores three TDs in win

Thursday, October 11, 2012 by TJ ENGLE in HS Sports

For two and a half quarters, Palmerton made it look as if Mason Schuler wasn't going to have a big game last Friday night.

Late in the third quarter however, Schuler had enough.

With his team trailing by a touchdown, Schuler went on a tear. He scored the game-tying touchdown, scored the go-ahead touchdown and added an insurance touchdown.

Schuler's first touchdown of the season sparked the Tigers' offense, which scored 31 unanswered points in a 38-21 win over the Blue...

Miller, Vecellio move on

Thursday, October 11, 2012 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

Monday marked the first time in Northwestern school history that two golfers played in the District 11 championship tournament.

It also marked the first time a Tiger twosome advanced into the PIAA East Regional round.

Colonial League champ Cole Miller and teammate Nick Vecellio both placed in the top six at districts Monday at Shawnee Golf Course and both played well enough to advance to next week's regional at Golden Oaks Golf Course in Fleetwood.

Miller makes his...

Backyard Brawl is about family

Thursday, October 11, 2012 by ED HEDES in HS Sports

Northern Lehigh and Northwestern Lehigh have formed quite a rivalry on the gridiron in recent years and both schools have come together to play this Friday night's football game for a great cause.

Bo and Brett's Backyard Brawl takes place on Friday at Tiger Stadium and funds will be raised for the Bo Tkach Memorial Organization and Brett Snyder.

Bo, son of former Northern Lehigh head coach Jim Tkach, who was a standout quarterback for the Bulldogs, took his own life in 2007....

Marich anchors Albright's backfield

Thursday, October 11, 2012 by BY CJ Hemerly Special to the Press in HS Sports

During Austin Marich's senior year of high school at Northwestern, he didn't know where, or even if, he was going to play college soccer. Marich had a plethora of college offers, including Division I, before he sustained a torn ACL.

His club team, FC Revolution, participated in college showcase tournaments. Some schools remained recruiting him, and others gave him a walk on option.

"It was tough because I had other opportunities at Division I levels," said Marich. "That's what...

Homecoming game marred by mistakes

Thursday, October 11, 2012 by ROD HECKMAN in HS Sports

They had a good week of practice.

It was Homecoming Night.

And they had just stopped their opponent on the game's opening drive.

All the signs seemed to favor a special night for Northwestern.

But with one play, all the positive vibes in Tiger Stadium seemed to disappear in an instant.

Notre Dame took the opening kickoff Friday night and marched to Northwestern's nine-yard line in nine plays. But the Tigers benefitted from a Crusader holding call and...
