Stopping Csicsek will be top priority

Friday, November 9, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

The key to stopping Saucon Valley this week will surely be containing Panther running back Ian Csicsek, who averages over 200 yards per game and gashed Lehighton for over 200 last week in a district playoff win.

Northwestern head coach Josh Snyder put in what he termed the “Panther defense” for the first game between the two teams. He simply moved an extra player into the box looking to contain Saucon Valley running back Ian Csicsek and it worked as well as could be expected, with...

SV upsets Northwestern in title game

Friday, November 9, 2018 by TODD KRESS in Sports

Northwestern outshot Saucon Valley 12-1. The Tigers also held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks. And the top-seeded, three-time defending district champion Tigers dominated time of possession the entire second half.

But when all was said and done, the only stat that mattered was the 1-0 final score in favor of Saucon Valley.

Zack Mikota scored on a penalty kick in the first half to lift Saucon Valley to a 1-0 victory and the District 11 Class 3A boys soccer championship last...

Tigers fall in opening round of state tourney

Friday, November 9, 2018 by BRAD HURLEY in Sports

Offensive pressure is key in most sports and field hockey is no exception. Whichever team can control the ball in the opposition’s defensive zone throughout that game usually comes away with the victory.

In the first half of opening round play of the PIAA Class A state tournament, New Hope-Solebury dominated in that aspect against Northwestern Lehigh, scoring two goals off that pressure. The two goals were all the Lions needed to advance as they defeated the Tigers 2-0n.

It was...

Tigers will add some ‘wrinkles’ vs. SV

Friday, November 9, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

In what was perhaps their best played game of the season, the Northwestern football team went into Illick Stadium at Saucon Valley High School and beat the previously undefeated Panthers 49-28 back in October.

Saucon Valley also fell the next week to Notre Dame (Green Pond) and the Tigers and Panthers finished with identical 8-2 records. When the brackets for district playoffs were released, Northwestern and Saucon Valley were set for a rematch in the semifinals and with both teams...

Girls take third at state XC

Friday, November 9, 2018 by PATRICK MATSINKO in Sports

Chris Stitzel gathered his team, much like he does before every race.

But this time was different.

The Northwestern cross country coach knew what was on the line. Coming off Colonial League and District 11 titles, Stitzel was well aware the Tigers entered Saturday’s PIAA Cross Country Championships with a realistic opportunity to contend in the Class 2A field.

“I told them right before we raced that I knew we had a shot,” Stitzel said of a potential top-two finish in the...

Lehighton tops NW in field hockey title game

Friday, November 9, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

Northwestern Lehigh may have had a very sound game plan to face Lehighton in the District 11 field hockey finals, but we’ll never know. Coach Lissa Opolsky had a tough time getting her players to stick to the plan and the result was a 2-0 loss to the Indians. The win gave Lehighton its first district championship since 2010.

The first half ended in a scoreless tie, but Lehighton had dominated most of the action. Just four minutes into the second half, it appeared the Indians had...

Tigers pull off New Tripoli Special

Friday, November 9, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

Football fans outside of New Tripoli might not know it, but the play that helped the Eagles win Super Bowl 52 and came to be known as The Philly Special was originally the New Tripoli Special. Northwestern varsity football head coach Josh Snyder had used the play in the past, prior to Super Bowl 52. He used it again Saturday night in a district playoff game against Allentown Central Catholic and it worked to perfection as part of Northwestern’s 50-13 win over the Vikings.

The win...

ACC, Rauscher bros. visit Tigers Friday

Thursday, November 1, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

The Northwestern football team returns to the District 11 playoffs for the first time since 2015 when it advanced to the finals, but fell to Notre Dame (Green Pond) 32-22.

This time around, the Tigers start with a game against Allentown Central Catholic, a team that going by the records, the Tigers should win easily. The problem is that it’s difficult to compare teams from different conferences and the 3-7 Vikings will prove a tougher team than many may think.

“In the Colonial...

Boys reach District 11 title game

Thursday, November 1, 2018 by EMMETT MCCALL in Sports

It might not have been the prettiest goal Sam Seyfried has ever scored.

But what it lacked in beauty, it more than made up for in importance.

Seyfried scored the game’s only goal as Northwestern defeated Southern Lehigh, 1-0, in a District 11 Class 3A boys soccer semifinal game on Tuesday at Palmerton.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s a SportsCenter Top 10 goal or an ugly goal, they all count the same,” said Tiger coach Nate Hunsicker. “Sam scored off a mess in front and that’...

Tigers hold off Rough Riders

Thursday, November 1, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

For a team that came into the season finale 1-8 and was just looking to finish out its season, the Catasauqua Rough Riders got off to an impressive start against Northwestern but couldn’t keep the momentum going. Eventually, the Tigers wore them down in a wild 61-27 game where in the first 3:32 of the game there were just eight plays from scrimmage, but 28 points as the two teams battled to a 14-14 tie at that point.

Catasauqua’s Wilquon Clemens settled under the opening kick-off and...
