The Eastern Conference Class AA championship features the defending champion North Schuylkill (8-3) taking on Northwestern (8-3), who aren't as familiar with the post-season as the Spartans team. Both teams picked up impressive wins in the semifinals last week, with the Tigers clubbing Nanticoke 50-21 and the Spartans downing North Penn 28-6.

The Spartans come in to Tigers Stadium having put together an impressive streak of wins. North Schuylkill was at 4-3 this season when it went on...

Girls soccer falls in second round of state playoffs

Wednesday, November 13, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Northwestern's quest for a state title in girls soccer came to an end Saturday when they dropped a 2-0 decision to Villa Joseph Marie at Exeter Township High School. The Jems played a tough defense and gave the Tigers very little room to operate on offense. Northwestern was able to manage just five shots on goal in the game.

"Their defense was unbelievable today and we had a tough time getting any open looks," said Northwestern head coach Kelly Bleam. "That early goal kind of had us...

Roughies fall in overtime

Saturday, November 9, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Being called on to kick a game-winning extra point can certainly be considered a pressure situation, but for Northwestern's Brandon Miller, it was just another kick.

The extra point in overtime gave the Tigers a 28-27 overtime win against previously undefeated Catasauqua and temporarily kept Northwestern's hopes for a spot in the District 11 playoffs a reality.

Miller had a busy night, being pressed into punting duties as well as the kicking duties for the Tigers thanks to an...

Nanticoke visits for first round of EC playoffs

Saturday, November 9, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Since losing to Pen Argyl, the Northwestern Tigers have basically been playing playoff games each week. The loss to the Green Knights left the Tigers needing wins over both Bangor and undefeated Catasauqua to give them any shot at reaching the postseason and the team stepped up and won both games.

The points ranking system left Northwestern just short of making the district playoffs, but did put them into the Eastern Conference Class AA playoffs as the top seed, giving them home field...

Lady Tigers make amends for 2012 losses

Saturday, November 9, 2013 by PATRICK MATSINKO in HS Sports

ALLENTOWN - Colonial League title? Check.

District title? Check.

By defeating No. 2 Blue Mountain 4-1 in the District 11 Class AA title game, the top-seeded Northwestern Lehigh girls' soccer team made amends for a successful 2012 season that was overshadowed by losses to Saucon Valley in both the Colonial League and district championship games.

The significance of claiming both titles in the same year is something that is not lost on coach Kelly Bleam.

"It's just...

Lady Tigers take district title

Saturday, November 9, 2013 by TODD KRESS in HS Sports

The Northwestern Lehigh girls' soccer team remembered the feeling from last season's loss to Saucon Valley in the district championship game.

The Tigers made sure last week they wouldn't experience that same hardship a year later.

Tied in a 1-1 game against Blue Mountain, the No. 1 seeded Tigers scored three consecutive goals to capture the 4-1 victory over the No. 2 seeded Lady Eagles and the District 11 Class AA Girls' Soccer Championship last Thursday at J. Birney Crum...

Yost, Pierce earn medals at state cross country meet

Saturday, November 9, 2013 by PATRICK MATSINKO in HS Sports

HERSHEY - Northwestern's Haley Yost and Carly Pierce have come together to give the Lady Tigers a dynamic duo this season. The two propelled the team to another 26-0 regular season to go along with Colonial League and District 11 Class AA titles, with both claiming top-five finishes in each race.

That teamwork was on display once again during Saturday's PIAA Championships, as Yost finished in fourth place with a time of 19:25 while Pierce took 20th in 19:54, more than good enough to...

Girls soccer beats Palmyra in state playoffs

Saturday, November 9, 2013 by ED HEDES in HS Sports

Northwestern Lehigh girls soccer coach Kelly Bleam breathed a sigh of relief following Tuesday's PIAA girls soccer first round Class AA playoff game at Northern Lehigh Stadium.

The District 11 champions went over 70 minutes before they scored what would be the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over District 3 third place team Palmyra.

The Cougars season came to an end with a 12-11 record, after making their first trip in school history to the state tournament.

Cerrone breaks into top 100 at states

Saturday, November 9, 2013 by PATRICK MATSINKO in HS Sports

HERSHEY - For the second consecutive year, the Northwestern boys cross country team earned a trip to the PIAA Championships after claiming the District 11 Class AA title.

That performance certainly set the bar high for a squad that was also coming off a second consecutive 24-2 season and a runner-up finish in the Colonial League meet. But for coach Chris Stitzel, the real accomplishment was just making a return trip to Hershey after losing a number of key runners to graduation.
