Burns keeps dropping time at UNC

Thursday, January 9, 2014 by TODD KRESS in Sports

During Madison Burns' career at Northwestern High School, the school didn't have a swimming team. Therefore, Burns swam individually, while devoting her junior year to representing the Tigers in various meets throughout the season.

When she was a senior, Burns didn't swim in the high school ranks, but instead she focused her final season while swimming on her club team, Parkland Area Aquatic Club.

That hasn't derailed Burns, a 2012 graduate of Northwestern High School, from...

Northwestern grapplers win two matches at Zephyr Duals

Thursday, January 9, 2014 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Northwestern's venture into the Zephyr Duals this past weekend at Whitehall High School started with some promising showings. The Tigers picked up a 45-30 win over East Stroudsburg South and then edged LaSalle College 37-34.

Unfortunately, the afternoon session wasn't nearly as friendly to Northwestern. The Tigers lost to Whitehall and Wyalusing by a combined score of 114-39.

Coach Jim Moll was excited about the good start, but didn't have an answer for why his team struggled...

Thursday, January 9, 2014 by TYLER TRUMBAUER Special to the Press in HS Sports

Last year Northwestern defeated Southern Lehigh in the regular season, but fell short in the league title game.

Tuesday night, the Lady Tigers completed the first step on their road to revenge against the Lady Spartans.

Northwestern (6-0 Colonial League, 10-0 overall) defeated Southern Lehigh 58-53 at Southern Lehigh High School in arguably the most anticipated Colonial League girls basketball match-up this season as the Lady Spartans (6-1, 8-4) led the South Division and the...

Bernhard got both his wins by fall, and his losses were a 9-8 decision and a sudden-victory tiebreaker loss.

Northwestern's Cole Moyer (145) went 1-2.

Tigers fall to Panther Valley, 55-46

Friday, January 10, 2014 by TYLER TRUMBAUER Special to the Press in HS Sports

Northwestern was playing catch-up for most of the game last Thursday night against nonleague foe Panther Valley.

Unfortunately for the host Tigers, they were never able to catch the Panthers.

Northwestern went 5-for-24 from the field in the first half, including a four-point first quarter, which set up an up-hill battle the Tigers weren't able to conquer as Panther Valley took the victory, 55-46.

The game was scoreless for the first 2:28 until the Panthers struck first...

Willis' unselfish play fueled big season

Friday, January 10, 2014 by TJ ENGLE in HS Sports

Kyle Willis admitted that people often told him he had a selfish mentality when it came to playing the sport he loved.

Instead of letting those negative gestures slow him down, the four-year Northwestern soccer player used it to fuel his love and passion for the game.

At first, it may have looked that way with Willis' ability to score goals. Looks can be undoubtedly be deceiving, especially since the two-time Colonial League First Team All-Star pointed out the fact that he had...

Lady Tigers battle back to beat Liberty, 58-54

Tuesday, December 24, 2013 by TYLER TRUMBAUER Special to the Press in HS Sports

It didn't look good for the Lady Tigers on Monday afternoon.

The girls were trailing the Liberty Hurricanes (2-1, 2-2) by seven with 4:14 left and without senior point guard Sabrina Mertz. As a team, the girls were shaky from the free throw line for most of the game.

Fortunately for the Lady Tigers, sophomores Megan Landrigan and Erika Thomas made two clutch three-pointers and Thomas went 5-for-8 from the foul line in the last 90 seconds of the game, allowing Northwestern (5-0...

Boys beat Hamburg for third win

Tuesday, December 24, 2013 by TYLER TRUMBAUER Special to the Press in HS Sports

Collin Breidinger didn't play the last 4:09 of Monday's game against Hamburg as he fouled out.

Despite being ineligible to finish the game, the senior still made his presence felt.

Breidinger scored 11 points and grabbed three rebounds to help Northwestern (1-5, 3-5) defeat Hamburg, 64-47 in a nonleague contest at Northwestern Lehigh High School.

It was rough out of the gate for the Tigers as they were down 12-7 after the first quarter and didn't lead the game until a...
