Tigers top Bombers

Monday, December 24, 2018 by PATRICK MATSINKO in Sports

Time will tell what it means at the end of the year.

But for one night, its importance was obvious.

An early-season Colonial League showdown with Palmerton last Thursday was a chance for Northwestern boys basketball coach Billy Hallman to find out a little bit more about his team.

The Tigers gave Hallman exactly what he was looking for with a 55-43 victory over the Bombers.

“This was a big game, (against) a rival, a division opponent, a really good team, early in...

Grapplers down Palmerton

Monday, December 24, 2018 by TODD KRESS in Sports

Northwestern head coach Jim Moll expected a tight match in the Tigers’ Colonial League opener at Palmerton last week. He even anticipated a much closer result than what transpired.

Nonetheless, it was a solid win for a Northwestern team that graduated six wrestlers and four state qualifiers a season ago.

Three Tigers picked up pins last Wednesday night, including Ryan Haverkamp’s fall at 182 pounds to close out Northwestern’s 40-30 win over Palmerton.

“We expected a...

Lady Tigers fall to Southern Lehigh

Monday, December 24, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

Northwestern and Southern Lehigh have had some pretty spirited battles over the past few seasons, but the Spartans have been ruling girls basketball in the Colonial League and they looked to flex their muscles against Northwestern in their first meeting of the season.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, Southern Lehigh was able to corral the high-scoring Northwestern offense and hang the first loss of the season onto Northwestern’s record with a 45-30 win over the Tigers.

It was the...

Girls eclipse 50 in first three games

Thursday, December 13, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

Scoring 50 points in back-to-back games is nice, but it’s nothing new for the Northwestern girls basketball team.

The Tigers had a seven-game win streak last season where they scored at least 50 in every game.

They also went 7-2 in their last nine games last season and scored at least 50 points in each of those. It is impressive to start this season with back-to-back 50 point games though since they lost four of their top five scorers from last season to graduation.

Tigers top SV in season opener

Thursday, December 13, 2018 by TODD KRESS in Sports

Returning all of its starters from last year, as well as welcoming back forward Luke Hallman after missing half of last year with a torn ACL, the expectations are high for head coach Billy Hallman’s Tigers. He believes this is his deepest team yet.

In Northwestern’s season opening victory, that was evident early an often against Saucon Valley. The Tigers led 15-10 after the first quarter, grew that to double digits in the second and held on for a 64-52 victory on Tuesday night at...

Girls team has new faces, same high expectations

Thursday, December 6, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

Northwestern Lehigh girls basketball coach Chris Deutsch believes in playing tougher teams to provide more of a challenge for his players. That’s the case both in the regular season and in scrimmages as the team prepares for the season. Northwestern had two scrimmages, both against perennially strong East Penn Conference teams in Easton and Nazareth.

The Tigers open the season with two games against EPC teams, facing Whitehall and Emmaus in a span of less than 24 hours. Last season,...

Tiger grapplers must replace six starters

Thursday, December 6, 2018 by MIKE HAINES in Sports

There might not be a wrestling team in the area that has to replace as strong of a graduating class as the one Northwestern said goodbye to last year.

The Tigers had four state qualifiers last year, and all are gone, including state champ Caleb Clymer.

“Replacing Caleb and Jackson[Bernhard] and Matt [Peters] and Colin [Rex], they’re tough to replace talent-wise,” said Northwestern head coach Jim Moll. “As far as work ethic and setting an example, we don’t have a void. Harrison...

Boys hoops returns everyone

Thursday, December 6, 2018 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

If the Northwestern Lehigh football team had things go its way, the Tigers would be preparing to play for a state championship this weekend in Hershey. The football team’s run ended with a loss in the District 11 semifinal, which allowed a number of players to instantly hit the basketball court in time to get ready for the season.

Northwestern boys basketball head coach Billy Hallman knows that he could have been without key players, but he was also hoping for some of his players to...

The Colonial League announced its 2018 girls volleyball all-star team recently.

Below is a look at this year’s All-Colonial League Girls Volleyball team.
