Grapplers compete at Zephyr Dual Tourney

Wednesday, January 9, 2019 by STEPHEN ALTHOUSE in Sports

Northwestern Lehigh’s wrestling team battled top competition Jan. 5 during the Zephyr Duals at Whitehall High School, defeating Southern Lehigh in a consolation round after dropping matches to Bangor, Muncy and Pocono Mountain East.

“We wrestled well,” said Northwestern head coach Jim Moll in assessing his team’s overall performance. “We wrestled some tough teams. Bangor’s tough. Muncy’s real good, I think fourth in the state. So it was good to see what that competition looks like. It...

After a tough loss to Bangor, the Northwestern Lehigh boys basketball team took out some frustrations on Salisbury in a 69-50 win over the Falcons.

Devin Thomas picked up a game-high 20 points in the win over Salisbury (5-6 overall, 3-4 Colonial) that brought Northwestern back to a 5-5 overall record and a 4-3 Colonial League mark.

The Tigers led by eight after the first quarter with Salisbury’s Tommy Sylvester keeping the Falcons in the game leading all scorers in the early...

Girls roll past Falcons, 63-22

Wednesday, January 9, 2019 by TODD KRESS in Sports

After a slow start in an overtime game against Bangor a day earlier, Northwestern senior Sage Christopher thought the Tigers might come out of the gate a bit slow against Salisbury last Friday.

The opposite turned out to be true, as Northwestern had one of its best starts to a game this season.

The Tigers raced out to a 19-3 lead in the first quarter and exploded for 28 points in the opening eight minutes. That is more than the Tigers would need as they disposed Salisbury...

Boys beat Hawks

Saturday, January 5, 2019 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

Some teams shy away from physical play on the basketball court. All they want to do is run the court and avoid contact, much like a fighter who knows he’s in trouble.

The Northwestern Tigers can run the court with the best of them, but they can also stand their ground and battle. When their recent game against Hamburg took an extremely physical turn, the Tigers used it to their advantage and came away with a 69-51 win, turning what was once a close game into a blowout.

Girls beat Hamburg to go 5-0 in nonleague games

Saturday, January 5, 2019 by MIKE HAINES in Sports

With a win over Hamburg last Thursday, the Northwestern girls basketball team completed its nonleague schedule without a blemish.

The Tigers started fast and pulled away in the second half last week in a 49-31 win on the Hawks’ home floor.

That completes a 5-0 nonleague slate and allows Northwestern (9-1 overall) to focus entirely on Colonial League games the rest of the way.

“This is our tenth game of the year already,” said Tiger head coach Chris Deutsch. “We played 10...

Bollinger named to All-State team

Saturday, January 5, 2019 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

As Deven Bollinger sat in class on Thursday, little did he know that he had been named to the all-state football team at the quarterback position. In fact, it wasn’t until later in the evening when his teammate Conner Snyder congratulated him via a text message that Bollinger had any inkling about the honor. Bollinger then took to Twitter to confirm the news that he had garnered the biggest honor of his high school career – so far.

Even with the big season that he had leading...

It’s been a tough start to the season for the Northwestern Lehigh boys basketball team. The early schedule had the Tigers off for the opening weekend but then backed up a bunch of games, leaving them with little time to practice or rest up. Finally, they hit a point in the schedule where they had three days off last week and used them to work on some things in practice.

The result was one of their better performances of the season in a 56-43 win over Northern Lehigh in a key Colonial...

One of the perplexing things for Northwestern girls basketball head coach Chris Deutsch has been the fact that his team will sometimes come out and start slowly in a game. The Tigers might have done that Friday night against Northern Lehigh if not for sophomore center Emily Sekerak, who rattled off the team’s first 10 points of the game and helped lead Northwestern to a 45-38 win over the visiting Bulldogs.

“We’ve come out slow in a few games, and I don’t know why that is, but tonight...
