NW field hockey gains attention

Thursday, October 3, 2019 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

Nobody took Northwestern field hockey seriously last season and the Tigers were just fine with that. The end result was a trip to the District 11 finals and a chance to play in states.

This season, opposing teams know just how good Northwestern is and they’re taking them much more seriously. It still hasn’t bothered the Tigers, who have gone 10-3-1 overall and 9-3-1 in the Colonial League.

With the season winding down, the Tigers have punched their ticket to both the league and...

New style helps boys soccer surge

Thursday, October 3, 2019 by TODD KRESS in Sports

Northwestern head coach Nate Hunsicker admits he was a bit stubborn about changing things up schematically. But the move he made may have saved the Tigers’ season.

After playing in the Hamburg tournament back on September 7, Hunsicker veered away from the Tigers’ traditional 4-5-1 alignment. Since then, Northwestern (11-3-2 overall, 9-2-1 in Colonial League) has lost just one of its last 10 games.

The defense has pitched seven shutouts since the switch. And Saturday’s 7-0 romp...

Next up for Tigers is 1-4 Palmerton

Friday, September 27, 2019 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

Palmerton comes into Tiger Stadium with a 1-4 record, which is a bit deceiving. The Blue Bombers have had a difficult stretch of games to open the season. After an opening week demolishing of Palisades in a 47-6 win, Palmerton had to face Southern Lehigh (5-0), Saucon Valley (4-1) and Notre Dame of Green Pond (3-2) on consecutive weeks. The result was losing all three by a combined score of 112-40.

Last week, Palmerton hosted Pen Argyl and fell 28-21 with the Blue Bombers falling into...

Boys soccer team shuts out three straight opponents

Friday, September 27, 2019 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

High school teams don’t have much better weeks than the one just turned in by the Northwestern Lehigh boys soccer team. The Tigers not only went 3-0 with wins over Moravian Academy (10-1-0 overall, 7-1-0 Colonial), Pen Argyl (4-4-1, 3-4-0) and Palisades (4-8-0, 3-5-0), but they also shutout their opponents in each of the games, outscoring them 14-0. When combined with a scoreless tie against Southern Lehigh on September 17, Northwestern now has four straight shutouts.

The biggest win...

Hallman, Smalley medal at leagues

Friday, September 27, 2019 by MIKE HAINES in Sports

Two Northwestern Lehigh golfers earned league medals Monday at the Colonial League golf championships, held at Bethlehem Municipal.

Luke Hallman shot 79 for fifth place overall, while Gabby Smalley carded a 90 for second place in the girls tournament.

Both Tigers are now exempt from the district qualifying tournament and earned places in the October 7 District Championship Tournament.

Ben Ortwein (Notre Dame GP) won the tournament in a playoff with Palmerton’s Tyler...

Five Tigers score goals in win

Friday, September 27, 2019 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

Northwestern Lehigh picked up its 12th win of the season Tuesday night in a strong 5-1 win over Palisades.

Five different players scored goals for the Tigers. The win puts Northwestern at 7-1 in the Colonial League, just behind Southern Lehigh (8-0-1) and just ahead of Salisbury (6-1-0).

The Tigers’ only loss of the season came at the hands of Southern Lehigh, while Salisbury’s only loss came against Northwestern.

McGinley leads Northwestern past Palmerton

Friday, September 27, 2019 by TODD KRESS in Sports

Due to two unfortunate injuries to two top hitters, Northwestern volleyball head coach Lexi Ashburne had to adjust the Tigers’ lineup yet again for Tuesday’s Colonial League match against Palmerton. One of the biggest changes was shifting senior Sam McGinley from outside hitter into the middle.

And while things looked shaky at times for the Tigers as a unit, McGinley looked impressive in the middle. She finished with a game-high six kills as the Tigers (5-5) swept Palmerton in...

Tigers open quick lead, beat Bangor

Friday, September 27, 2019 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

After having spent three of the first four weeks of the season on the road, the Northwestern Lehigh Tigers returned to Tiger Stadium looking for a fourth straight win.

The offense went to work immediately and on their first four possessions of the game, the Tigers went down the field and pushed the ball across the goal line for a quick 28-6 lead over Bangor.

From there, the Tigers didn’t look back as they finished with a 41-13 win over Bangor.

The offensive line played...

Lady Tigers suffer first CL loss of 2019

Wednesday, September 18, 2019 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

With big wins over Bangor (6-2-1 overall, 4-2-0 Colonial) and Saucon Valley (5-3-0, 5-1-0) this past week, the Northwestern girls soccer team pushed its season mark to 9-0-0 overall and 5-0-0 in the Colonial League.

Perhaps the wins were coming a little too easily, because in their 10th game this fall the Lady Tigers came out flat against Southern Lehigh and lost their first game of the season.

“I think the only thing they did tonight was that they outworked us,” said Tiger...

Holmes earns award

Wednesday, September 18, 2019 by CHUCK HIXSON in Sports

He might have missed the first two weeks of the football season, but Northwestern sophomore Justin Holmes has made his presence felt in the two games he’s played this season.

Saturday, in the Tigers’ fourth game this year and Holmes second, he caught eight passes for a school-record 215 yards. For his performance, Holmes was named Player of the Week by the Times News of Lehighton.

“I took what I could from the time on the sidelines and got as many mental reps as I could,” said...
