Q. I see lots of seniors in casinos. They come in by the bus load. I was wondering whether older people have more problems with gambling than younger people?

About 1 percent of all adults in the United States have a serious gambling addiction. The statistics on senior gambling indicate that compulsive gambling is a greater problem among older adults than adults in general.

Everything but the kitchen sink

Thursday, September 17, 2015 by FRED CICETTISPECIAL TO THE PRESS in Social News

Q. What do the warnings on the bottles under my kitchen sink mean? I find them confusing.

Many of the household products we use contain poisons. These include pesticides, oven cleaners, detergents, polish, paint and drain uncloggers.

Manufacturers use a low-medium-high system on labels to alert you to hazards. The following are brief descriptions:

If the label on a container says “caution,” that means the contents could hurt you. For example, the product’s fumes might make you sick.

Healthy Geezer: Reduce plaque, reduce cavities

Tooth decay and gum disease are caused by plaque, a layer of bacteria. Plaque can build up quickly on the teeth of older people. In addition, seniors have a greater tendency to get decay around older fillings. Seniors have more fillings than younger people because of fluoride not being in the water.

Cavities in the roots of teeth are more common among older adults because the roots are exposed when our gums recede and we become “long in the tooth.” The root surfaces are softer than tooth enamel and decay more easily.
