James R. Haines Jr. 59, of Brockton, formerly of Allentown, died Aug. 18, 2012, in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre.
Born Oct. 15, 1952, in Easton, he was the son of the late James R. Haines Sr. and Peggy J. (Buchman) Wagner.
He was a self-employed construction contractor in Lehigh and Carbon counties.
Virginia Dare Schiffer, 80, of Allentown, died Aug. 15, 2012, at home.
She and her husband Calvin Schiffer were married 54 years before he died in 2007.
Born in Weisenberg Township, she was the daughter of the late William and Grace (Wambold) Smale.
A 1949 graduate of the former South Whitehall High School, Allentown Hospital School of Nursing class of 1952, and a 1972 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, she was a school nurse and chairperson of health services in the Allentown School District before retiring in 1993.
Gladys B. Smith, 83, formerly of Warren, N.J., died peacefully Aug. 15, 2012, with her loving family by her side.
She was predeceased by her husband James J. Smith in 2007.
She was born in Massachusetts.
She was a telephone operator with Verizon for 25 years.
she was a huge Elvis fan and enjoyed reading, painting and music.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Reynold G. Reinert, 75, from Fogelsville, died Aug. 17, 2012, in his home.
He and his wife, Grace B. (Kratzer) Reinert, would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on Sept. 1.
Born in New Tripoli, he was a son of the late George H. and Luella A. (Snyder) Reinert.
A 1954 graduate of Kutztown High School, he worked at the Kutztown Shoe Co. as a laster from 1954-74.
He worked part-time from 1972-74 for Weisenberg Township as a zoning officer.
In 1975, he became Weisenberg Township administrator and sewerage enforcement officer.
Grace A. Weiss, 85, of Germansville, died Aug. 17, 2012, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown.
She was the widow of Allen Weiss.
Born in Treichlers, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Edna (Peters) Clauser.
She was employed as a sewing machine operator for 30 years.
Her survivors include a daughter, Linda Carter at home; sons Larry and wife, Kathryn, and Russell, all of Germansville; sister Mae Kistler of Orefield; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
John E. Lezousky, 72, of Schnecksville, formerly of Tamaqua, died Aug. 12, 2012, in Bethlehem.
He was the husband of Elizabeth "Betty" (Stegmeier) Lezousky.
Born in Pottsville, he was the son of the late John G. and Amelia (Potosky) Lezousky.
He retired after 26 years from Lehigh County Community College.
Upon his retirement, they awarded him the status of "emeritus."
Prior to his employment with LCCC, he was employed by Kraft Foods, Fogelsville, and Reynolds Metals, Chester.
He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Tamaqua.
Jane T. Ekstrom, 85, of Neffs, formerly of Harmony, N.J., died Aug. 10, 2012, in the home of her daughter, Carol A. Herman, of Camden, N.C.
She was the wife of the late Oke B. Ekstrom Sr.
Born October 24, 1926, in Gloversville, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Willard Sr. and Florence (Van De Walker) Kobuskie.
A retired seamstress, she worked in the textile industry for many years.
She attended Rochester School for the Deaf and was a member of the Lehigh Association of the Deaf, Allentown, for many years.
She was of the Catholic faith.
Arlan R. Kunkel, 83, of Steinsville, Kempton, died Aug. 10, 2012, in Liberty Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Allentown.
He and his wife Eva J. (Hemerly) Kunkel celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in January.
Born in Steinsville, he was a son of the late Calvin P. and Lila J. (Frey) Kunkel.
He loved being a lifelong self-employed farmer in the Steinsville and Lynn Township areas.
He was a member of the Kempton Rod and Gun Club; the Kempton and Lynnport fire companies as well as a member of the Patriotic Order of the Sons of America, Philadelphia.
Joseph Anthony "Tony" Toole moved onto his next venture Aug. 9, 2012, after a life highlighted by a wealth of friendships and bold entrepreneurship.
Born in Scranton to John and Florence (Tigue) Toole, he was raised in Allentown and graduated from Allentown Central Catholic in 1967.
An athletic youth, he stood 5 feet 9 inches tall but could dunk a basketball.
He earned a degree in finance at the University of Miami in 1971 and began a successful career with Fairmont Real Estate, later founding his own firm, Hallmark Real Estate.
Ronald R. Bittner, 71, of Whitehall, formerly of New Tripoli, died Aug. 13, 2012, at home.
Born in Pleasant Corners, Heidelberg Township, he was the son of the late Russell and Violet (Wiesner) Bittner.
A 1963 graduate of Rider College, formerly in Trenton, N.J., he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in commerce.
He was a manager and buyer for Hess's Department Store for many years and also worked for Dun & Bradstreet, Bethlehem.
He was a member of Heidelberg Lutheran Church, Heidelberg Township, and was a member of the Grundsow Lodge in Kutztown.
