Bimbo Bakery to bring 100 jobs to Upper Mac

Horsham-based Bimbo Bakeries USA, which makes Arnold and Stroehmann breads, is building a new state-of-the-art bakery in Upper Macungie Township.

The company, which is planning a $75 million facility at 105 Boulder Drive, Breinigsville, will produce bread and buns for the Northeast.

More than 100 jobs are expected to come to the area when it begins operation in early 2014.

Grundsau Lodge 16 Am Jahden is having its annual gathering at Wehr's Dam, Orefield, 7 a.m. on Feb. 2.

They will watch for the groundhog (Yahdee) to arrive by coming down the Jordan Creek on a raft.

Following Yahdee's arrival, they will sing Pa. Dutch songs, pledge to the flag (in dialect), then anxiously await to hear what Yahdee says about the coming of spring.

Everyone is invited to come by and enjoy this annual event.

I read an obituary in a newspaper last night. It took me all of four seconds.

Just 12 words long, this final tribute, so to speak, listed only the man's name, age, most recent town of residence and date of death. It told us nothing about the person.

Whenever I see one of those tiny obits, especially on a page with others that take up an entire column or two, I feel sad.

Although the little obits at the bottom of the page may be sparse, they speak volumes.

South Whitehall Township man charged with running methamphetamine lab

According to Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin, a South Whitehall Township man has been charged with operating a methamphetamine laboratory out of his home.

Martin says police seized an assault rifle with a loaded magazine, chemicals, packaging materials and other items used to manufacture methamphetamine Jan. 17 when they entered the home.
