Volunteers assist in Hurricane Sandy relief effort at New Jersey shore

Twenty-seven members of New Life Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Tripoli, recently traveled to Keansburg, N.J. to help with clean-up efforts following Hurricane Sandy.

The group, working with volunteers from St. John's United Methodist Church, Hazlet, N.J., left at 5 a.m. Nov. 24 for the hour-and 49-minute trip to the shore.

Following their arrival and registration, the team was assigned to three homes in the flood-ravaged area six blocks from the beach.

With budget season behind them, Lehigh County commissioners convened Nov. 20, to address a handful of reappointments and bills.

The board unanimously voted to reappoint Commissioner Percy Dougherty to the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission and Susan Schmidt, of Emmaus, and Sally Schoffstall, of New Tripoli, to the Lehigh County Aging and Adult Services Advisory Council.

The Knights of Columbus Council 10921 of St. Joseph the Worker, Orefield, will be hosting its annual free throw contest for boys and girls 3:30-6 p.m. Jan. 4, 2013, in the church gymnasium.

Registration is 3:30 p.m. with shooting starting 4:15 p.m.

The Carbon Model Railroad Society will have an open house 7-9 p.m. Thursdays Nov. 29 through Jan. 3, 2013, at 529 Ore St., Bowmanstown.
