For some this Memorial Day weekend will mark the offical start of summer. For others, it means great sales and a day off from work.
But the true meaning of Memorial Day is to honor fallen soldiers.
Gen. John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, gave his General Order No. 11, and the first Memorial Day was observed May 30, 1868.
Flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Over the years, fallen U.S. soldiers from all wars are remembered on the last Monday in May.
