Fair Midway adds new thrill rides

Two new "spectaculars," as the largest thrill rides are referred to, are coming to the Midway at the Great Allentown Fair, Aug. 28 - Sept. 3.

Powers Great American Midways spokesman Marc Janas reported that the carnival will unveil a "beamed-out," spaceship-looking ride called "Alien Abduction" that spins passengers into such a whirl that gravity pins them against its walls.

The other new ride called "Genesis" takes a gondola full of thrill-seekers on a 360-degree spin as if they are on the end of some wild second hand on a clock.

Civil War 150th exhibit at Fair

The "Pennsylvania Civil War 150 Road Show," a 53-foot modified tractor-trailer transformed into a travelling museum, visits the Great Allentown Fair Aug. 28 - Sept. 3.

The museum will be manned and managed by staff and volunteers of the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum.

"We are excited to be a part of this extraordinary event. The Great Allentown Fair is one of the best and largest fairs in the country," Joseph Garrera, Executive Director of the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum, said.

KidsPeace sites win web awards

Two websites supported by KidsPeace received 14th annual Web Health Awards.

TeenCentral.Net received a bronze award in the Interactive Content-Rich Media division for the Anti-Bullying League. ParentCentral.Net received a general award recognizing it as a web-based resource.

"There is a tremendous need to make children, teens and parents aware of what bullying is and how it affects everyone involved," said Julius Licata, Director of TeenCentral.Net and ParentCentral.Net.

'Total Recall' is needed

What I recall after seeing "Total Recall" are weapons, shooting, leaping, hand-to-hand combat, violence, explosions, flying cars, chases, and more weapons, shooting, leaping, hand-to-hand combat, violence, explosions, flying cars, chases and more weapons.

If I sound like a broken record it's because I am mirroring the images and impressions of "Total Recall," a reimagining, or reboot in simple words, a remake of the 1990 movie that starred Arnold Schwarznegger, based on author Philip K. Dick's "We Remember It For You Wholesale."

retired from LCCC

John E. Lezousky, 72, of Schnecksville, formerly of Tamaqua, died Aug. 12, 2012, in Bethlehem.

He was the husband of Elizabeth "Betty" (Stegmeier) Lezousky.

Born in Pottsville, he was the son of the late John G. and Amelia (Potosky) Lezousky.

He retired after 26 years from Lehigh County Community College.

Upon his retirement, they awarded him the status of "emeritus."

Prior to his employment with LCCC, he was employed by Kraft Foods, Fogelsville, and Reynolds Metals, Chester.

He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Tamaqua.
