New 4-H Club forming in NWL

A new Lehigh County 4-H Club, Northwestern Lehigh Community Clovers, is forming and members will choose what projects and areas of interest they want to explore during their first meeting at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6.

Club meetings will be at Jacob’s Church Activity Center, 8373 Kings Highway, New Tripoli, the first Thursday of the month, except July and August.

The fun and learning go beyond the meetings, with opportunities to attend sleep away camp, day camps, enter at the fair, and more.

They will go over what 4-H is, how to join, and have activities for the kids.

4-H’ers learn life skills at potato grading contest

A record number of contestants participated in the 2020 4-H Potato Grading and Identification Contest Jan. 7 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.

One hundred and thirty-nine 4-H members from 33 teams participated in this exciting contest.

Registration numbers increased by 40 percent from last year and included five new counties.

4-H youth from Blair, Bradford, Bucks, Carbon, Indiana, Lebanon, Lehigh, Lycoming, Mifflin, Montgomery, Northampton, Union and York counties all tested their knowledge of spuds.

The first and second place “B” teams were from Lehigh County.

Angel Food Cake with Strawberry Crème Filling

Angel Food Cake

1-1/4 cup flour

1-3/4 cup sugar

1/4 tsp. salt

1-1/2 cup egg whites (about 10 eggs)

1 tsp. cream of tartar

1 tsp. vanilla

Beat egg whites until they form stiff peaks. Then add cream of tartar and vanilla.

Sift flour, sugar and salt about five times.

Gently combine egg whites and dry ingredients, then pour into ungreased 10-ince tube pan.

Place in a cool oven.

Turn oven to 325 degrees.

Lebanon Student earns honor roll

Zachary Creighton of New Tripoli was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference’s Fall Academic Honor Roll at Lebanon Valley College, Annville.

Creighton, a graduate of Northwestern Lehigh High School, is a member of the Lebanon Valley College men’s soccer team, and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in actuarial science at The Valley.

The academic honor roll is comprised of student-athletes who compete in a varsity level sport and registered a term/semester GPA of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) or higher.

TurfMutt contest deadline March 16

The TurfMutt Foundation announces The (Really) Great Outdoors Contest 2020, focused on urging kids to use their imaginations around the many uses and benefits of green space and the outdoors.

Created in partnership with Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, the contest encourages students in grades six to eight to write about and/or draw a nature space their community could use.

Students are also asked to include text to describe the space, discuss what elements are needed, and how their space will be used to benefit the community.
