McPhee magic at Zoellner

"Gala2012" stars Kath-arine McPhee of NBC's hit television series "Smash," 8 p.m. Oct. 20, Baker Hall, Zoellner Arts Center, Lehigh University, Bethlehem.

"Smash" is about the creation of a new Broadway musical, "Bombshell," based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, portrayed by McPhee on the show.

Original music by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman is featured on "Smash," which debuted this year after "Super Bowl XLVI" and has been renewed for a second season.

Cedar Crest names development head

Cedar Crest College has appointed Debra W. Khateeb as director of development.

She will be responsible for major and planned gift fund-raising, and will direct the private and government grant program. In addition, she will work with the Cedar Crest Fund and reunion classes.

Prior to joining Cedar Crest, she was executive director of foundation relations for the Montgomery County Community College Foundation, Inc., Blue Bell.

Ben Franklin invests $260,000

The Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP-NEP) Board of Directors has approved the investment of $260,000 in support of regional economic development.

Since beginning operation, BFTP-NEP has helped to create 15,479 new jobs for Pennsylvania workers and retain 21,459 existing jobs, start 429 new companies, and develop 1,127 new products and processes.

Harvest fest set for Oct. 6

Florence R. Wotring

Florence R. Wotring, 89, of Schnecksville, died Sept. 25, 2012, in Cedarbrook, South Whitehall.

She was the wife of late Carl R. Wotring.

Born April 10, 1923, in Slatington, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Maybel (Olewine) Lorah.

Her survivors include children Sharon K. Haas and her husband, Harry, of Schnecksville, Sheldon C. and his wife, Gail, of Bowmanstown, Timothy J. and his wife, Linda, of Schnecksville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Her service was private.

Beekeepers honor Lehigh County, Penn State Cooperative Extension

During a recent meeting, Lehigh Valley Beekeepers displayed their appreciation to Penn State Cooperative Extension and Lehigh County for their continued support of apiculture and local beekeepers.

District 18 Director of Penn State Cooperative Extension Richard S. Kauffman, who oversees extension offices in four area counties, participated in the meeting and met with more than 50 beekeepers from the Lehigh Valley and beyond

He accepted an en-graved wooden plaque of appreciation from the association on behalf of the extension service and Lehigh County.
