Help available for electric bills

Income-eligible PPL Electric Utilities customers having trouble paying their electric bills still have time to apply for assistance through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

The deadline for application is March 29 for the federally funded program, administered in Pennsylvania by the state's Department of Public Welfare.

Keep in mind customers don't have to have an unpaid bill to qualify and don't need to be a public assistance recipient to apply.

Dennis L. Bittner, 72, of Schnecksville, died March 16, 2013, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

He and his wife Marie M. (Berk) Bittner celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary last Sept. 3.

Born Nov. 25, 1940, in Weisenberg Township, he was the son of the late Elvin P. and Gertrude C. (Hahn) Bittner.

He was a farm laborer at Jaindl Farms Inc., Orefield for 20 years before retiring.

Prior to that, he was employed at the former Trexler Orchards, Orefield.

Agnes M. Reichl

Agnes M. Reichl, 94, formerly of North Filbert Street, Allentown, died March 12, 2013, Cedarbrook Nursing Home, South Whitehall.

She was the wife of the late William A. Reichl.

Born April 24, 1918, in Allentown, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Ellen (Hoover) Beehrle.

She was a sewing machine operator at the former Quaker City Textile, Allentown for 20 years before retiring.

She was a Catholic.

Books needed for sale

The American Association of University Women are accepting book donations from 9 a.m.-noon on March 20 through April 15 and with an additional dropoff 4-7 p.m. Wednesdays.

The items will be sold at AAUW's used book sale from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. April 24 to 26 and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. April 27.

Preview Day is 2-6 p.m. April 23.

Donation dropoff and book sale location is the Memorial Pool Building, 307 Illick's Mill Road, Bethlehem.

Proceeds benefit the Let's Read Math project.

Jaindl honored by Cedar Crest associates

David Jaindl, owner and president of Jaindl Farms, Jaindl Turkey Sales, Jaindl Land Company, and Schantz Orchards, all in Orefield, was recently awarded the 2013 Associates Award from the Associates of Cedar Crest College during a March 6 luncheon at the college.

Jaindl, who has worked on the family farm since he was 8 years old, is still out in the fields nearly every day.

He commented on receiving his award.

"I am very honored and humbled to share this award with prior recipients," Jaindl told The Press after the luncheon. "They are community minded people."

Penn State

Parkland grad

on dean's list

Ryan Rizzetto of Slatington was named to the the fall 2012 deans list for academic excellence at Penn State University at University Park.

Rizzetto, an enginnering major, is a 2012 graduate of Parkland High School .

He was nominated for membership into the National Society of Collegiate Honors.

He is the son of Diane and Perry Rizzetto.

Ferrel M. George

Ferrel M. George, 96, of Schnecksville, died March 19, 2013, in the home of his daughter.

He and his late wife Gertrude I. George were married 75 years.

He was the son of the late Morris S. and Katie Estella (Sterner) George.

A member of Redeemer Lutheran Church for more than 60 years, he performed many volunteer duties at the church.

He worked at Ritz Bar-B-Q, was a milkman for Lehigh Valley Dairy and worked at the Pa. Army National Guard Armory, Allentown, until retiring.

'Tom Sawyer' on April 25-27

Players of the Stage will be performing "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain at 7 p.m. April 25, 26 and 27 and 2 p.m. April 27 at Living Hope Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 330 Schantz Road, Lower Macungie.

The show was adapted for stage and is being directed by Sharon Barshinger Gerdes.
