Art in ‘Remnants’ at Rotunda

Artist Domenick Naccarato uses pieces of wood, hardware, wire, twine and a few nails in his art work. Then he applies non-traditional finishes of wood stains, house paint, joint compound and roofing tar.

Domenick Naccarato, “Remnants,” continues through Oct. 31, Rotunda Gallery, Bethlehem City Hall, 10 E. Church St., Bethlehem. The solo exhibit is presented by the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission. The artist’s reception was Oct. 9.

Allaik matters at Civic 514

Walk into Civic Theater Gallery 514 and what stands out is artist Khalil Allaik’s impressively large canvas (18 ft. x 48 in.) without a wooden stretcher suspended from the ceiling by a wiring system. “Sedona Vortex” transcends the canvas. Allaik shaped the canvas to give it the illusion of three dimensions.

The exhibition, “The Artwork of Khalil Allaik,” continues through Sept. 30. The gallery is open 30 minutes before film screenings in Civic Theatre514.

“Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art,” a traveling exhibit organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, through Oct. 2, Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley, Fifth and Court streets, Allentown, includes 89 contemporary artworks by 71 artists in the Museum’s Trexler Hall, Scheller, Rodale, and Fowler Galleries.

“In The Heights” is “a beautiful score with the fundamental portrait of a neighborhood,” says Dr. James Peck, who’s directing the production July 13-31, Dorothy H. Baker Theatre, Trexler Pavilion for Music & Dance, Muhlenberg College, as part of the Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre’s 36th season.

“In The Heights” is a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical by composer and lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda and librettist Quiara Alegría Hudes. Lin-Manuel Miranda is the acclaimed actor-creator of “Hamilton,” the smash Broadway musical which was nominated for 16 Tonys and received 11 this year.

Six days into the new year, the Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley made art history with the first-ever commissioned mural in the museum’s vestibule entrance.

The Allentown Art Museum commissioned surrealist artist Rigo Peralta for a three-panel mural, “Transcultural: A Mural,” on view through Jan. 14, 2018.

Three exhibits examine role in university education

Lehigh University is celebrating its Sesquicentennial Anniversary as a teaching institution through the arts. As part of its 150-year celebration, Lehigh University Art Galleries (LUAG) is opening three art exhibits this fall:

"Object As Subject: The LUAG Teaching Collection," "Of The Americas: Contemporary Latin American Art" and "Revisiting South Bethlehem: 150 Years of Photography." The three exhibitions were curated from The Lehigh University Art Galleries Teaching Collection.
