State Rep. Gary Day, R-187th, sat down with kindergarten classes at Weisenberg Elementary recently and read the book, “On The First Day of Kindergarten,” by Tish Rabe and illustrated by Laura Hughes.
He started with Amanda Reifinger’s class and then visited Laura Luca and Marion Miller’s classes reading the same book.
Based on a show of hands, some students were already familiar with the story, others were not.
This was the first time Day met with students in the first week of school.
There will be no school Aug. 30 and on Sept. 2 due to the Labor Day holiday.
District band rental night will take place 7 p.m. Sept. 4 in the Weisenberg Elementary School cafeteria.
The districtwide English as a Second Language Parents Night is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 10 in the Northwestern Elementary library.

Opening day for students in the Northwestern Lehigh School District is Aug. 26.

While the first day of anything — a new job, new school, new band — can be nerve racking, Allison Kline, M. Ed., the new high school marching band director, feels right at home.
“We’re happy she’s here,” said James Lykins, M.Ed., assistant marching band director and middle school band director. “Northwestern Lehigh High School hasn’t had a high school band director in six years.”
Kline comes from the Mahanoy Area School District with about nine years of experience in band, choral and music direction.

I have been in publishing more than 25 years and I have written and published fiction and nonfiction books, short stories and articles.
A member of the Greater Lehigh Valley Writers Group, I served a year as the co-chair for its annual conference, The Write Stuff.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, 1700 Hawk Mountain Road, Kempton, is having a volunteer weekend for teenagers, ages 14 through 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 29 and 30.
Trail maintenance, managing and clearing out some invasive species so native plants can properly flourish and preventing spotted lanternfly infestations. Registered teenagers may be able to log their volunteer service hours.
Northwestern Lehigh High School will host its 2019 graduation ceremony 11 a.m. June 1 at Stabler Arena, Bethlehem.
