Softball team earns top seed in league
As the top-seeded softball team in the Colonial League playoffs, the Lady Tigers had to sit back and wait this past weekend while four other teams battled in the wild card round of the Colonial League playoffs. Little did they know that their layoff would be as long as it has, with rain wiping out games early this week.
The result is that Northwestern Lehigh hasn’t played since it beat Catasauqua last Wednesday on Senior Day.
On that day, everything was functioning as it should for Northwestern as it beat the Lady Rough Riders 17-2. Morgan Farthing led the way with four RBI on three hits, pulling herself out of a recent slide at the plate. Senior Ashley Sisco continued to produce, also delivering three hits and driving in three runs for Northwestern.
Senior pitcher Emily Akelaitis was helped along by the 17 runs, but was strong over her four innings of work. This season, Akelaitis has put up impressive numbers with 107 innings pitched, a 14-3 record and a 2.09 ERA for her senior season. She also reached the 100-hit plateau for her career a couple weeks ago.
While Farthing went through a bit of a cold snap at the plate, she still managed to lead the team with a .612 average through the regular season, with Akelaitis right behind with a .609 average on the year. Freshman Isabella Terprovich played in 11 games with the team this season and hit .444 in 13 plate appearances. Molly Mitman was also over the .400 mark with a .424 season average.
Power has been a key for Northwestern as they launched 20 regular season home runs on the year. Akelaitis led the way with seven, while Farthing had five and Mitman had four. Another freshman, Brynn Balliet had two home runs during the regular season. Farthing and Akelaitis were the big run producers, with the freshman Farthing driving in 33 runs and Akelaitis knocking in 30. Hitting at the top of the order during the season led Mitman to score 29 runs, good enough for second on the team behind Akelaitis, who crossed the plate 36 times.
In the Colonial League semifinals, Northwestern will face Palmerton, who downed Wilson in the wild card round of the league playoffs on Saturday to advance. Northwestern and Palmerton split their two regular season games with the Bombers downing Northwestern 6-1 in the second game of the season and Northwestern then traveling to Palmerton to pick up a 4-2 win as part of their season-long nine-game winning streak.
