Willard A. Gower Sr.
Willard A. Gower Sr., 84, formerly of Whitehall, died April 4, 2018, in Phoebe Home, Allentown.
He and his wife Miriam A. (Delahunty) Gower were married 63 years last April 17.
Born Feb. 5, 1934, in West Pittston, Luzerne County, he was the son of the late Otto and Pearl (Traher) Gower.
He faithfully and honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War era.
After earning a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics and philosophy from Washington and Jefferson College, he was a systems engineer at IBM in Philadelphia, and Poughkeepsie, N.Y. for 25 years before retiring in 1989.
He was a member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Whitehall, formerly serving on the church council and teaching Sunday School. While living in Poughkeepsie, he volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Hospice, was a Boy Scout leader and coached a church basketball team.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by children Willard A. Gower, Jr. (Sharon) of Salem, N.J., Bernard G. Gower (Teri) of Walkersville, Md., Susan A. Place (Edward) of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Dr. Deborah L. Whittaker (Harold) of Allentown; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
His memorial service will be 10 a.m. April 12 in Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3355 MacArthur Road, Whitehall, with the Rev. Michael J. Bodnyk officiating.
Family and friends may pay their respects 9-10 a.m. Thursday in the church gathering area.
Interment with military honors will follow the service at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown.
