John B. “Jack” Hemmis, 82, of Orefield, died Jan. 2, 2018, at home.

He and his wife Joanne L. (Carter) Hemmis were married 60 years last July.

Born in Morrisdale, he was the son of the late Agnes Miller.

He was a toolmaker for the former Western Electric Co. and the former AT&T, which became Lucent Technologies.

He retired from Lucent after 44 and a half years in January 2000.

He held various positions with Local 1522, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

A member of American Legion Post 576, Allentown, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1952-62.

He served on the advisory board for the former Lehigh County Vocational School, was on the board of directors for both the Lehigh County United Way and Senior Citizens of Lehigh County, and was vice president of the Lehigh Northampton Labor Council for many years.

A member of Emmaus Masonic Lodge 792 F&AM, where he served as past master twice, he was a 32nd Degree Mason with Lehigh Consistory, Allentown.

He loved spending time outdoors hunting and fishing, and spending time at his cabin.

He was a member of Jordan Lutheran Church, Orefield.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son Scott and wife, Tammy, of Slatington; daughter Denise Klinefelter and husband, Randy, of Allentown; grandchildren Kaitlin and Jacob Hemmis, and Lyndsey McGrevy and husband, Brendan, and Jon Klinefelter; and his great-granddaughter Madison.

His services will be private.
