Paiste eyes third straight AA title
The annual District 11 tennis tournament will be starting up Thursday at the West End Racquet Club.
Northwestern area junior Henry Paiste will be looking to bring home his third consecutive AA title.
While Paiste is used to the district proceedings by now, this year has been different. Since Northwestern requires at least two would-be players to make a tennis schedule, and Paiste was the only Tiger trying to play this year, all he could do was train throughout this season. On the bright side, he has been working with West End tennis pro Hernan Hernandez and has been participating in USTA tournaments. Still, he has been keeping an eye on his possible competition.
"I have been keeping my eyes open," Paiste said. "I have been looking around at the guys and seeing who is still around and who might be someone to watch out for.
"Every year is equally difficult and I expect it to be as tough as ever this year."
Paiste has won each of the last two AA championships. He won as the four-seed his freshman year before winning as the two-seed last year.
"I don't believe in defending titles," said Paiste. "I think every year is a new year and you have to go out and win. There are new players and different competition every year. You aren't given anything and you don't deserve anything unless you go out and do it yourself.
"Winning a third title would be surreal though. To win one was unreal. To win a second was pretty crazy. If I could somehow pull out a third this year it would be an amazing feeling."
Paiste received a number on seed in the AA bracket and will face off against Notre Dame East Stroudsburg's Michael Biffen.
